Aura Designer Dressmaking Program

This introduction to dressmaking runs for three hours weekly on a 6 week cycle. The Aura Dressmaking Fashion Program is designed to teach you the fundamentals of the bodice pattern and technical components of dressmaking.

As a bonus you will receive a custom made Master Torso Foundation Pattern made using your own individual measurements which you will use to design your own dress.

Week 1:

Transfer Corrections to Master Torso Foundation Pattern for adjustment

As someone who wants to confidently design clothes that suit you, you need to learn how to identify fit issues in the pattern in relation to your body and how to solve them. Once you have corrected your pattern you can confidently design several more garments knowing your base is accurate.

Week 2:

Bring in your design inspiration.

Learn how to manipulate your Master Torso Foundation Pattern to create your chosen dress design patterns.

Cut and sew Design Toile.

Fitting and make corrections to the dress design pattern.

Please do not go for an overly complicated design to start eg no corsetry as that is a specialised garment. If you desire to independently and creatively make your own styles it is important to learn the various ways you can manipulate your pattern staring with this foundation course. This process will require you to critically think and may require two to three design toile tests depending on the complexity of your design.

Understanding patterns and shapes in relation to your body is neccessary and an absolute asset!

We will also discuss fabric and haberdashery selection, how much you will need and where to buy. Please make sure you purchase your fabric to bring to class in week 3.

Week 3

Second or third design toile tests

In this session we will discuss about the sewing order and learn the process of planning ahead.

Finalise your purchasing list and details

Week 4-6

In week for we will conclude toile testing, finalise your dress patterns; tidy up corrections, proper markings, seam allowance etc and will jump into:

  • Cut and prep fabric for sewing.

  • Receive guidance on sewing and technique.

  • Fittings

  • Alterations

  • Completion

Please bring your own sewing tool kit every session. Calico and tracing vilene will be provide for the first lesson only. Please bring additional mock making materials for every other week, fabric and haberdashery are at the individuals cost.

Additional sewing kits, supplies, tools and fabrics are available for purchase on site.

Due to limited spaces, all sewing lessons are final and cancellations will result in forfeit of payment. Bookings are strictly NON transferable to other class dates. Please check dates before making your sewing class bookings as there can be NO exceptions.


  • You will need to be acquainted with the sewing machine; sewing a straight line, threading etc. The very first lesson is learning the sewing machine and sewing practice exercises.

    If you are not familiar with the sewing machine please take a private Sewing For Beginners class before program to get you up to speed.
